thing to happen and this first in our city, a city target store here in the middle of the city is going to be great and i love daly city and others but you know they're quiet and rather to drive down there our residents, our visitors can have a store right in the heart and have the brand names of things we're accustomed here. i think they will find it convenient and on all levels of affordability and so forth and i think the store is going to be a over night success. i'm a big supporter of it. gosh talking about being a corporate citizen and the construction jobs and the permanent jobs and they really did itlet right way and of the 300 jobs people have been hired by city target. 70% are franciscan residents. isn't that a great accomplishment? i know they worked hard. they worked hard with mission hiring hall and economic and work force development and the hiring events here and training and built up the expectations and they were met and this is what i love about being the mayor of san francisco. we can talk about jobs and working with target we can actually deliver them and this is the

26,000 who best exemplifies what service is to our city. when i was first elected to office, i asked a lot of people, literally hundreds of people, who is the smartest person in government. with all due respect to the other smart people in this room, there was one name that came up over and over again. that was our awardee. whenever i have a question that was difficult to answer, i would ask my staff, who are we going to call? the same name always came up. it was our awardee. i'm going to tell a story that has not yet been told publicly, but i'm going to share it today. in late 2010, when the board of supervisors, when we were casting around for someone to play the role upon interim mayor, and when ed lee was still telling us he did not want to serve, i invited this man to my kitchen table, as did a number of my colleagues, to convince him. tonight we honor the career of a man who has served our city for 28 years, who has left us a legacy of which he and the entire city can be proud of. tonight, we celebrate the lifetime achievement of ed harrington. time for questions and i also want to introduce marc trotz. i said something about housing first a while ago, this started in new york city called pathways to housing about 20 years ago. and the idea there was prior to this, let's get people ready to housing and then let's get them into housing. that never ever happened with any kind of regularity because people were so badly disabled and the idea they would get better on the streets was frankly a ludicrous idea. the national conversation shifted about two decades ago, the notion of let's get people housed first and then we'll work with them on their disabilities has been not only at local levels but also on the federal level what's been promoted and over the last 8 it 9 years, so that's what we tried to do. and at that point, you know, the mainstream housing developers, the affordable housing producers which this town has many incredible affordable housing producers were well-known for as small a town as we are the number of good housing, affordable housing producers, they weren't at all convinced that having people who had been h

known as the first asian-american mayor in san francisco history. mayor lee championed balancing the budget to keep san francisco safe, solvents, and successful. he reformed city pensions. his focus is on economic development, job creation, and building san francisco's future. a great job, especially for helping out families. we want to keep families here. i also wanted to mention a little bit of his past. he was born in 1952 in the beacon hill neighborhood of seattle, washington. his parents immigrated to the u.s. from china and the 1930's. his father fought in world war ii and worked as a cook. he passed away when the mayor was 15. his mother was a seamstress and a waitress. mayor lee has five siblings, he graduated from college in maine, he also went to uc- berkeley law school and finished in 1978. he and his wife have two daughters. i also want to mention, prior to becoming mayor, one of the key points in his contributions to the community is after he completed law school, he worked as a managing attorney for the san francisco asian law caucus, where he was an advocate for afford

trips. we have to prepare for the future. let me close with a couple of quick thoughts. first i believe that our connecting community slogan it is real. we are the greatest city in the united states and we are an incredible city because our communities come together for our subway and for our giants. second, we have to do more. we have to make sure that we're taking care of not just our daily needs on muni and not just our daily needs for the pedestrians, our sierkists, those in cars, those that walk, but we have to make sure we're investing in the long-term projects, and lafltly i just want to say one thing. we know over the history of time great cities don't regret building subways. they regret not building them. thank you.
